New-to-me name: Emma Domb

What would we do without the internet? In my previous post, I mentioned a dress in the new SATC movie that I am keen on. Erica told me there is a book that shows all the outfits of the movie. She kindly offered to scan the picture for me (naturally, she owns the book!), but thanks to Google, I found it online in a matter of minutes:

The dress is vintage, by Emma Domb. I'd never heard the name before, but another Google search told me that the California company produced dresses between 1939 and the 1970's. I also found that Shannon is a big fan of the label.

The dress is essentially a fitted sheath with skinny, super-long kimono sleeves. This one's going in my inspiration file.

It is a great dress, you should be able to run this up no problem! I'm off to see the movie on Friday, looking forward to seeing all the clothes!

I see this in a jersey knit for the sheath, and then a sheer silk for the kimono sleeves...

We're doing a group movie trip next week, but thanks for the preview. I can definitely see you in this one. And do you love the Barbie shoes that SJP is wearing? I want them. Even more, I want to be able to walk in them!

Hello Christina...I know all good things come to an end and the time they are a changin', but I miss your cute, retro banner...it suited your blog title so well.

Christina, you should have no problems in recreating this dress, it's lovely and would look soooo good on you, have you already thought about the color?

Any ideas on how I can duplicate tihs dress? Do I bring in the picture to a tailor?

Karen - They do look like Barbie shoes, don't they? LOL. They are actually Manolos...

Katherine - I kinda miss my old blog header too, but after a year it was time for a change. I still have it saved, though!

Marita - Not sure about the color. I like the aqua blue of the original. But I also love wearing plum/purple.

Lesley - A tailor would be able to reproduce this dress, or at least refer you to someone else who can. I'm sure they'd appreciate a picture :)

Okay, I saw the movie last night. That was one of the best among many really really good vintage dresses. Plum would really work if you didn't want to do the turquoise, though. Just saying.

I Agree, the designer is a long lost gem I looked at some of her other stuff. By the way I am Laura and I religiously read your blog. I have one of my own st www.snobbysewer.blogspot.com you should stop by sometime. It's not as cute as yours but it alright.

Emma Domb was an interesting designer. I used to work as a fitting model AND also did once a week fashion shows with her stuff during the lunchtime at the Sheraton Palace Hotel. (I'd get $10 and a free lunch -- for putting on 20 different outfits and wandering around the diners). This was the early 70's.
She was really well known for really weirdly UGLY ball gowns, very conservative suits, and wedding dressing.
Being a fitting model was horrid...she'd sit in a big chair and tell her assistant "tell her to put her arms up" and I'd be standing on this little stage in a dress that was either inside out or totally pinned together. I had to WAIT for the assistant to say "can you put your arms up" (if I did it after she said it she'd YELL AT ME to follow directions). This usually meant being pricked by a few dozen pins... and my arms had to stay up until she said to he, who said to me. Geez...she was big on that. She yelled a LOT. Really a tempermental artist type. Old and crotchety.
But, nice to see the old bat's stuff has a following now.
