I will choose the book that is in my purse near me on the floor rather than deciding which of the books on my bookshelf is technically nearest. The book is the hardcover edition of The Death of Vishnu by Manil Suri (he just came out with a new novel called The Age of Shiva which I'm on the waiting list for at my library so I'm tiding myself over with his 2001 bestseller which I'm pretty sure I started once before but never finished).
The woman screamed again, and Nafeesa pulled her away from the door, but not before Arifa noticed the woman's hands tied to a beam near the ceiling.
"This way," Nafeesa said, and they descended a narrow staircase that brought them back to the courtyard.
There were several people here, and Nafeesa hissed to Arifa to act as if they belonged.
Sounds exciting, no? It's actually a great read.
If it suits you, keep this going Lindsay, Kristy, Leslie, Reethi, and Dawn!

I read Death of Vishnu a few years ago, while I found the relationships between the families sharing a kitchen quite funny, I lost my interest during the long hallucinations scenes. My book club picked it because the author is local (MD). I would love to hear what you think when you are done!
Thanks for tagging me! I'll try to post today.
Thanks for posting those lines, Christina. I loved The Death of Vishnu and am inspired to go pick up a copy of Suri's latest!
Lisette - I think that's why I didn't finish the book the first time - those long hallucination scenes. This time I'm plugging through, I have just ~40 pages to go!
