Carolyn asked for some details on how I plan to track my yardage. I will use this blank book that a friend gave me last year, it's got old catalog pictures of vintage fashions on the cover. I plan to use the first several pages to track yardage, and the rest of the book is where I'll keep project notes (versus my current system of using the backs of envelopes, paper from the recycling bin, post-it notes, etc that I can never find when I need them).
For yardage sewn, I'll make a line listing of:
- fabric type, color & width
- cost/yd
- yards used
- pattern company & style number of the garment
I'll do the first two bullets also for yardage purchased. I won't, though, take an inventory of the fabric I already have. That's going to be grandfathered in...
I'm sure as I go along, I'll learn what I really do or don't want to track. It would probably be better to track it electronically but I want to use my cute little book.
Now I hadn't even considered posting a running total in a sidebar on my blog, but I have seen people do this before and it is kind of interesting. Okay, I'll go for it!

Your old system sounds like my system...lol. Never can find the info when you need it.
I am going to start an electronic one and only put in new purchases this year. Oh, and stash used. I might keep a tally on my sidebar too.

I use a book similar to that to track completed garments...for this year's garments I added the amount of fabric used after the description. Oh and I track the garments by month so I can see exactly how my sewing is progressing from month by month.
If you don't mind, I think I am going to "borrow" your yardage sewn. I threw up the sidebar not really knowing how I wanted to track it but knowing that I did! And since I don't count lining as part of my fabric collection, I don't think its right to track it as used out of the collection! *LOL*

Wow, that is a great notebook. And so appropriate for the cause! The notebook will probably be really helpful-- I have one that doubles as my idea book/hardback support for my mouse pad (since I have no computer desk.) The really nice thing about that is it's always handy when I see something online that I want to steal ideas from !
I'm assuming the cost per yard is only for the new stuff-- if you could remember the cost of all your older fabrics as well that would be SO impressive!
For yardage purchased, I also put down what I intend to use it for. It can be entertaining to compare the original intention with the final use!
