What's on your must-sew list this season?

Somehow this summer I managed to snag some amazing coat fabrics; these two here are my favorites. One the left is a star-pattern quilted coating by Anna Sui. It was a total impulse purchase from Emma One Sock. I'm searching my BWOF back issues for an appropriate pattern. On the right is a plaid wool coating by Burberry; I got it at Denver Fabrics for a mere $7/yard! I believe it's the same fabric as this double breasted "topper" available at Nordstrom for $1300. So a new fall coat is definitely on my Fall 2008 must-sew list.

What's on your must-sew list this season? Let me know by leaving a comment in this post; on Thursday, September 25 I'll draw one of the names to receive this latest issue of Patrones that I picked up in Spain:

Patrones Extra issue 272 is full of patterns to kick-start your fall sewing, or with a fabric substitution they could easily be adapted for the spring/summer wardrobes that those of you in the southern hemisphere are now planning.

Nice, yeah? So go ahead and leave a comment. I'll ship this anywhere in the world. Good luck and happy sewing!

  1. This fall I want to make a jumper for work.

  2. My goal is to make lots of work dresses (in heavier fabrics) to wear with black tights and great boots.

  3. That issue of Patrones looks amazing! I'm hoping to make a bunch of dresses--both casual and professional.

  4. We are just heading into spring here downunder, but seeing all those lovely Patrones styles makes me long for autumn again.

  5. This fall I want to make a wool jersey hoodie. I already have the pattern from BWOF, now all I need is the wool jersey

  6. I'm finishing a patchwork twirly skirt in Halloween fabrics (should have that done tonight), I just bought a BurdaKids coat pattern for my daughter so that's on the list, and I bought all the stuff for my daughter's Christmas dress. Those are my big 3 right now.

  7. I want to make a jacket with exposed zipper teeth (as seen in the 8/08 Burda). All of your work inspires me; I can't wait to see what you'll sew with those lovely fabrics. I've been dying to have an issue of Patrones...

  8. I am a beginner,so I am in love with any pattern that allows me to sew with knit fabrics.

  9. Think I'll be doing some sewing for the new apartment. Some new pillows maybe and a table runner? Maybe? As soon as I unearth myself from the rubble of my move....moving a large stash of fabrics has been a nightmare. I don't know where anything is....so I probably won't be sewing much in the next few weeks.

  10. I love those pictures from Patrones. I have my fingers crossed. I'm going to cross my toes too. 8)

I plan to sew a wool coat (dark purple melton), a couple more wool jumpers (a KS and BWOF), and a LBD (I have a few picked out).

  11. I have three coats on my to-do list (not sure I'll get to all of them), and I need 3-4 winter dresses. Also some pants and matching blouses, a skirt or two... A little bit of everything, I guess.

  12. Just curious, how did you get that fabric for $7 a yard? It's $14 on the website. Thanks!

  13. Would it be way naff to say that two of the skirts out of that Patrones mag would be what I want to make? I've had a slow-down on the sewing front (I'm a knitter, and sewing is frustrating territory for me) but I've been wanting a black pencil skirt for work and cannot find one *anywhere*, which is weird and dumb. That magazine has two styles I'd make... and a skirt is something I can accomplish.

Oh, oh! Also, my mum brought me back this gorgeous Trelise Cooper fabric from NZ - a striped gingham (yep) that I'm going to make into a full pleated mini, a la Prada.

  14. I got in the habit of wearing jeans all the time. I'm trying to change that by making casual dresses that I can wear everyday, work or play. I also plan to make a light weight jacket. I don't need the heavy wools where I live, but I do want one that will cut the chill when we get those cold spells. I love, love your coat fabrics, especially the stars. I miss wearing the winter fashions from when I lived a little further north.

  15. I also plan to make a coat, a few dresses and skirts.
Wow good score on the Burberry fabric. Thanks for the contest.

  16. OMG please let it be me!!! That Patrones has such great GREAT patterns.

Now aside from my drooling over the magazine...I have a HUGE list of new patterns. I even organized them into the short and long list on Flickr. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/58906932@N00/collections/72157605971427192/) The funny part is the short list is LONGER than the long list. High aspirations I guess.

My next two fall inspired items are
08-2008-115 coat in purple coating of course and I hope to work 08-2007-111 into the line up using some coated linen.

  17. That issue is really wonderful, isn't it? I must have spend a good hour pouring over the photos over at Fehrtrade! I just traced a pattern for a double breasted hip-length trench (Patrones #259, no 3) for the fall, so that's definitely in the works. Also coming up will be some more a-line shift dresses for work, a pair of wide-leg wool pants, and white shirt, not necessarily in that order.

  18. You're so lucky to have found Patrones on your vacation. When I went to France I literally stopped in every bookstore and sought out the fashion oriented ones and I could not find a single copy. Thank you so much for bringing an extra one back for a lucky someone. My must haves for fall are more skirts, in corduroy, wool, etc. I have a ton of tall boots that are just begging for more skirts.

  19. I want to sew the alice and olivia pants. I hardly made any pants at all because I think they are quite difficult to fit, especially for my figure. But I am encouraged by the result people have on patternreview.com, so I am going to give them a try.
    These are the pants: http://www.voguepatterns.com/item/V1051.htm??tab=skirts_pants_includes_designer&page=1

Love the Burbury fabric. I want to get some but I don't see it on EOS...

  20. OK, I'm going for a Michelle Obama dress (like the turquoise one she wore when she gave the speech at the DNC) and a Prada-esque lace skirt.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My plan is to first make up some nice jersey dresses that I have seen everyone else make over your summer. I have the fabric, patterns and now just need to get off my butt! That Patrones looks great. I love what I have seen others have been making lately from them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am working on making different shape jackets/blazers for the fall/winter to dress up jeans with silk or cotton shirts.
Also, I want to make a pretty-close-to-perfect black dress...a definite go-to dress for many occassions!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I want to make a coat and some long sleeve shirts for my daughter. I'm not sure if there's anything I plan on sewing for myself yet. :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. Can't wait to see what you do with those fabrics, especially the Anna Sui one.

As we are heading into spring I have tunics and cotton blouses/tops high on my list. I need something other than knit tops in my wardrobe.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The quilted coat fabric is Gorgeous!!! Have you seen V8123 done in a Dotted faux quilted leather.

My plans are to do at least one coat and a few suits.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm definitely thinking about work clothes. I have tons of dresses that aren't exactly work appropriate. So on my list are some blouses and maybe some skirts. The photos from Patones are very inspiring!

  28. Funny you should ask. I've just started working on a muslin for a silk ottoman jacket and lace skirt, for a wedding on Oct 11. Wish me luck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I finally got myself organized and put things in my closet together for outfits and figured out what I need to do this fall. So far, I have made a white/brown/teal/yellow two piece knit dress from two BWOF patterns and I want to make a brown knit skirt out of the same pattern I used and a brown knit dress. I'm still looking for the perfect knit dress pattern but I'm thinking of going with the Vogue pattern that Carolyn(Diary of a Sewing Fanatic) used for HER brown knit dress. The other major project I have to get started with is a (again...what IS it with brown?)1950s swing jacket from brown basketweave wool that I have. Busy fall.

  30. This fall my goal is to learn how to make pants without stressing about welt pockets or the fly. Fly front zippers will not longer intimidate me!

I've been on the hunt for the Patrones, as I heard it was a good one!

  31. My must sew list has been replaced temporarily while I attempt to perfect making a suit for my husband. Already finished one and now trying to get a better fit with a new muslin.

    ReplyDelete
  32. On my must-do's, a quilt top requested by a local lady, some fall shirts and skirts.

    ReplyDelete
  33. On my must sew list: "hoodless hoode" jacket, lots of new tops (my post pregnancy shape has left me without much to wear), a jumper, and a pair of Jalie pants (like Express' Editor pants).

Crossing my fingers on winning this issue!

    ReplyDelete
  34. As soon as I finish some shirts for my husband and a wool coat for my daughter, I want to sew up a couple of wool skirts for me and the jacket in the new Ottobre Woman.

  35. We are in Spring and quickly heading to a warm Summer here in Australia. I have a hankering to make a yellow dress this season. Haven't chosen a pattern yet though.

  36. I really want to make a lace jacket ala Prada and a dress with my army man camo fabric. (Which I will be cutting out tonight.)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh, I totally want to make a fire engine red trench coat. I'm thinking a knee length one. Just thing to combat the grey Washington days.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A plaid skirt! Very 70's collegiate loooking.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have to figure out how to make pants that do not ride up in the inseam when I walk, so it is pants or bust, :).

  40. I have to make shirts and dresses - after a wardrobe clean out (just in time for Summer!) I discovered that I have lots of jeans - and not much else. Bring on the buttonholer!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am finally working on my self-drafted basic pattern for a blouse, and once I get this done I will make a few blouses to learn how to draw different styles from that.

And until Christmas I have to decide whether I want the books on drafting coats and jackets or rather skirts and pants. I have never made pants myself...

  43. Like so many others, I have been bitten by the Prada lace bug. I will be making a lace skirt.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Love that Burberry wool you picked up! And what a bargain! I'm still on a dress making kick.

  45. My goal is to make most of my winter wardrobe I would love to make the BWOF coat in the Sept issue 101 Short coat and right now I am working on 110 Shirt from that same issue it is my first pattern I have ever done from the magazine

    ReplyDelete
  46. I LOVE your Burberry plaid - I'm also making a new coat this year, but unfortunately plaid doesn't stand up well to maternity alterations... : ( I can't wait to see what you do with your gorgeous fabrics!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Your burberry plaid is a dream. i just finished a mock up jacket for my daughter that would look great in the plaid! good luck with cutting it....sigh

    ReplyDelete
  48. Eeek I love that burberry wool!! I didn't know you grabbed that too. Any coats in the Patrones catch your eye?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am revved up to make a plaid pencil skirt with a pleat inset in the back-- good for work, but also just perfect for fall.

    ReplyDelete
  50. OMGosh, what cute stuff in that Patrones mag! Anyway, on my adjenda as soon as I finish up my son's jacket are some new tops for me. Now that the weather is turning I look at all my fall/winter tops and I'm not too jazzed about what is in my closet. And I plan to make at least one coat for myself. I really want a coat, but I need tops worse. Love both your fabrics!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Amazing fabrics! And for $7 per yard...I'm envious. But I know you'll transform them into something(s) beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  52. For the quilted coating you may want to look at the latest issue of Burda Easy Fashion. They havea voluminous coat there which IMO will compliment the fabric well and will have an overall updated mod look.

  53. At the very least, I have two things planned for fall sewing. VERY LEAST.
    They are:
    - High waisted skirt - I ripped the last one I made last weekend and nearly cried.
    - Costume. Jem. Also, need to pick up pink hair dye. And darker dye for the next day.

  54. I used to sew all the time, for myself and my daughter, then I gained alot of weight and stopped sewing. You have brought out the urge again.

    Thank you!
    I think I love you!

  55. Hi, I am a first-time commenter but I often stop by your blog - which I love - thanks.
I lost my sewing mojo in the woods but when I find it I plan to make a blouse and a party dress for me and some jersey clothes for my kids...

  56. Thanks for sharing the link to the Burberry coating fabric. A winter jack is one big project on my list this Fall.

The Patrones Issue looks fantastic! The first to dresses are my favorites!

  58. Hi Christina,
I'm Barbara from Germany and I have been a quiet reader of your blog for a long time. I really like your creations and your style.
There are of course way too many things on my to-sew-list for fall ;-), but the most important items are a woolen coat and trouser-style jeans.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love your blog!
I am actually going to be sewing alot of spring-into-summer clothes this fall. I'm going to Ireland at the end of June for two weeks, so I'm making my whole wardrobe for that trip this fall. Of course with it being Ireland I'll need to make lots of really beauitful coats!

    ReplyDelete
  60. My fall sewing list includes anything to use up this stash of mine. It is oppressive to me.

However, I'd probably add that Anna Sui fabric to it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Love your new fabrics, and reading all the fun plans in the comments here! I have a bunch of knit tops on the list, in pumpkin, cream and navy, a pair of trouser-style jeans, and a pair of twill pants in a great neutral color that falls somewhere between grey, green, and khaki. :)

  62. I just got a new job, so I'll soon be sewing clothes for the office...mainly dresses. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I, too, just bought an amazingly beautiful coat-weight Ralph Lauren wool print from Emmaonesock; I am going to make a coat from a vintage pattern (circa 1950s), but it is a style one could easily find on the runways this season. I also have fabric for two great winter hats. These projects are at the top of my Fall sewing list. I have never been able to locate a Patrones, and this issue looks great! Linda

  68. I am sewing art smocks for and baby doll carriers for little kids. I'll also sew bookmarks from the scraps. These will all be sold at an all handmade sale.

I really hope to sew a skirt for myself and my 3 year old.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm on a diet, so this spring (I'm in Australia) I'm going to make a lot of pretty blouses, skirts and dresses that I can feel good in. Yep, that's my must-sew list: blouses, skirts and dresses. Because they're all equally important.

    ReplyDelete
  70. What a great giveaway, Christina!
On my must-sew list are a black lace blouse, a burgundy jacket, and a sheath dress.

  71. I've been look online trying to get this magazine. How great your giving one away. This season I have to sew alot of jacket, Coats, Blouse, and some dresses, and crazy printed bottoms. Im trying to make clothes that will last all the way through winter.

  73. Well, once I finally finish all the sewing for my daughters wedding in November I would love to concentrate on perfecting some trousers for ME! Almost there with just some tweaking to do...whenever I get the chance!

    I'm loving me some plaid!

  75. A Steffi - I'm already working on that one; another jacket, more suit-style; if fabric of that one is left, a Sidonie skirt. And some more others, from which list I'll probably finish only one or two items, I know myself too well...

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm going to attempt to make a skirt that suits me. I love the way those skirts with the bulging fronts look on the statuesque models in all this year's BWOF mags, but they would just make me look four years pregnant...

    ReplyDelete
  77. thank you for sharing. I love the images from Patrones. My upcoming projects will be two dresses made from some thrifted and stashed materials. I plan to use some vintage patterns that I scored online. These have interesting sleeve constructions, like raglan or kimono, I really like these variations from the cap sleeve.

  80. This year I plan on sewing the Hot Patterns Cullottes in very light weight black wool and the Body Suit in a white knit. I will make the Sailor Pants for my daughter in denim. I will also make a new Victorian Ball gown for a Vintage dinner in December. I will use the Past Patterns 1900 Wedding Gown pattern and use a turquoise and yellow crossdyed taffeta. It laces up the front and has a ruffle around the neck. I am sewing the Laughing Moon petticoat to wear under it. I love the Fall Burda collection and haven't picked my favorites to sew yet. My daughter is in school in San Francisco and needs to get hers picked out too. I will make aprons and Pajama bottoms for my family for Christmas.

Have you left town? While you were on vacation, the weather here in Seattle was grey and dreadful. It just got nice after you got back. And now it's cold again. But seriously, how was the pattern making class at Pacific Fabrics? I have loved everything I have taken there.
