Dressew

I spent this past weekend in Vancouver, BC, with the husband and a group of friends. We left immediately after work Friday and returned late Sunday evening, so I didn't get a single stitch done on my quilted jacket project. I did, though, manage to break away on Saturday afternoon to pay a quick visit to Dressew.

As I approached the storefront, I discovered a line of people waiting to get into the store. They've got a huge selection of Halloween props and inexpensive fabrics that are perfect for costumes (polys, furs, glittery pieces, etc) so with Halloween being only a week away, I guess it shouldn't have come as a surprise that the place would be packed.

I cruised through a bit of the main floor, then headed down to the basement where the real bargains are to be had.

Clearance fabrics can be had for $3 to $4/meter. There's a lot of unappealing stuff down there but it's worth digging through.

Zippers in all colors and lengths.

Buttons, buttons, and more buttons.

All sorts of belt buckles and closure hardware.

Wide variety of lingerie elastic.

An assortment of boning.

I didn't buy anything this time (I'm trying to be good, plus I didn't have much time), but if I did, I would have thrown these decorative studs in my basket - only a quarter per package, with various colors and shapes available.

Wow, what a place! I think I could spend hours in there. How did you manage not to buy anything???

That looks like heaven. I'm amazed you didn't even come away with the studs - what a bargain!

Thank you for posting this store! We're planning a trip to BC for spring break. I know where I need to go to stock up on zippers!

Fun! Looks like the next best thing to a trip to the garment district.

I love the clearance at Dressew! It's also probably the only fabric store near downtown where I always end up on business (and I can walk there: bonus!). I was last there late last February and they were wall to wall in boxes of chocolate!

One addition: I think they only take cash, so come prepared!

What a great store! It reminds me of the Textile Discount Warehouse in Chicago.

Goodness, what an awesome store! It makes my new "super" Jo-Anne's look pathetic. :)

I wish I'd had time to go here the last time I was in Vancouver. What a spread!

hmmm...this alone might be worth the pain of getting a passport.

Woo Hoo! I have a business trip to Vancouver coming up in the new year, and you can bet I'm heading straight to Dressew! Hmm - might have to take an extra bag... Thanks for the tantalizing photos!

Dressew is one of a very small handful of fabric stores that I know of in Vancouver. The immensity of it and the "clearance" nature of it can be a little irritating after a while.

But it's good clean fun for fairly cheap!

It must be heaven... ;o))

Hey there, I just discovered your blog - it's going into my favourites list now.

This particular post makes me wish even more that I could make it over one province before I move back to Ontario. Bah!

I just read the post about your iphone - HOLY CRAP, the audacity of some people's children! And hooray for Samaritan Neil!

Oh, btw - there's a sisterhood for BWOF? After years of buying from the magazine shop I finally took out a subscription for 2008, which brings my current total to something like 60 issues. Is that enough to be part of the sisterhood? I now only buy BWOF and Vogue patterns - oh, except for the recent splurge on vintage 50s patterns (I really wish Advance was still around!)

Great pictures! What a fun store!

Thanks for your comment on PR - I haven't been sewing as much lately as I would like, but life just happens and it gets in the way, haha!

I have finished my FIT MA degree - sorta. I still need to finish my thesis totally (I'm *almost* done) and I have done the conservation work on an 18th century bonnet and have finished making the re-creation bonnet. I guess in a way I HAVE been sewing, but it isn't the fun type of sewing that I would like to be doing!

Hope all is well!!!
